Tatting is fun!!

A week ago, while surfing YouTube I came across a video tutorial by OVW about tatting. I absolutely love her crochet tutorials and used to follow them often when I first started to crochet. So back to the video about this thing called tatting which I’ve never heard of before. In the video, she was demonstrating how to make a flower earring and when I saw the end product I fell in love (I know, a little dramatic, but true). How did I know nothing about this awesome thing?!? As it turns out, it’s not a novelty either – it has been around since the early 19th century.

I had so get my hands on some tatting needles and fast! Since me and eBay are best buds, I asked him for some help and a few days later my set of 6 needles arrived. I jumped back online and watched all three parts of OVW’s tutorial and made myself two pairs of earrings. I absolutely love how they came out and making them was so much fun!

My first sale!

I’m so happy! I woke up yesterday to an email announcing that I’ve made my first ever sale on Etsy. It was the Minion Key Cozy that I wrote about in my previous post, and he is currently on his way to Texas. Quite a long way for the little guy!

Now I have to find some time between the many WIPs littering my desk and make another Minion.

I’ve been busy lately making stuff for family, friends, and also a few things that will go up for sale in my stores within the next few days. So stay tuned!

I’m happy to present my latest creation:

He is now available in both my Etsy and Zibbet stores. Be sure to check him out!

Mirror Sunflowers

And now, for the great reveal… 🙂

Here are the completed sunflowers attached to my bathroom mirror. I’m very happy with how they came out. My bathroom looks a lot brighter and cheery now.

Mirror Sunflowers

This idea can be taken so much farther by replacing the sunflowers with other kinds of flowers, garlands that go around the whole frame, hearts, butterflies, etc.

Sunflowers – Work in Progress

Here’s a look at my latest work in progress.

Sunflowers

I ironed and starched the pieces and now I’m waiting for them to dry before I sew them together. The finished project will be a decoration for my bathroom mirror. Basically, one sunflower with three connected leaves in each corner of the mirror. I will post pictures once it’s complete.

I got my inspiration from here but I only followed the pattern for the leaves, not the flowers themselves.

Pineapple Lamp Lace

A few weeks ago I stumbled across a pattern by Elizabeth Ann White called Pineapple Pumpkin Lace. I loved the look of it and decided to “repurpose” it a little. I wanted an item that I can display all year long, not just in the fall. So I used Elizabeth’s design to create a  decoration for the lamp in my bedroom.

Pineapple Lace

This is the smaller size (10 inches across) which I made using a size 10 crochet thread and 1.65 mm hook. It was really fast to make. Once I got 2 pineapples done, I could do the rest without needing to look at the pattern.

I think it turned out quite nice and in tune with my bedroom’s decor.

Turning – Clockwise or Counterclockwise?

Turning at the end of a crochet row can be done either way, clockwise or counterclockwise, and the result should be the same. As long as you’re consistent with which way you turn, your work will come out neat. There are a few websites that say you should always turn clockwise if you’re right handed and counterclockwise if you’re left handed so that the working yarn ends up behind the crochet hook.

Until now, I’ve been turning clockwise for no reason other than it came naturally to me. For the past couple of days I’ve been working on some diamond-shaped pieces which require an increase in the last stitch of every row. Since I intend to make a purse out of the joined pieces, I’m single crocheting rather tightly because I want the bag to be tough and sturdy. At the end of each row, I found it very difficult to get my hook through that last stitch. Besides it being worked tight, the top loops of the stitch seemed to be slanted away from me, making it even more difficult.

After my hand started to cramp up, I decided to try turning the work counterclockwise. Well, what do you know, the loops of the last stitch were straight against the top of the work and inserting the hook below them was a piece of cake.

I’m sure this difference is not noticeable when using a looser tension.

I’d like to know some of your thoughts on this so feel free to leave me your opinion in the comments section.

Braided Crochet Scarf

A few weeks back, I stumbled upon WindsorKnits’ pattern and was instantly inspired. I wanted one for myself in dark purple. I absolutely love it!

Braided Crochet Scarf Purple

It was very easy to make. Just 3 long strips, braided, and sewn together.

I’m thinking of making a second one in a lighter colour, maybe beige or cream.

Lace Cross Added To Store

Hi everyone.

The lace cross you saw in my previous post is now available in my store. It is available in a few other colours, although my favourite remains the white one.

Also make sure to check out the other items in my store and remember that I can do custom listings with any colour variations.

Happy shopping!!

Lace Cross

When I came across this pattern I thought it would make the perfect gift for my grandma, whose birthday is coming up in a few weeks. I thought she could use this as a bookmark for her bible.

The pattern was very well written and easy to follow. It took me about an hour to complete (also watching a movie at the same time). I decided to add some tassels at the end for a little more length so that the cross can stay tucked in between the book pages and just the tassels can hang out.
