4th Annual NICU Charity Challenge

Hi all.

I decided to put my talents to good use and, since it’s the season of giving, I have joined the Sunset Family Living Annual NICU Challenge. The challenge started on November 20th and will run until January 6th. It consists of making 12 preemie hats and donating them to the nearest NICU.

If you wish to join, just click on the picture below.

You don’t have to join this particular challenge to make a difference. There are many causes out there that one can support. But if you’re anything like me, you love creating things with your hands and sometimes run out places to store them or people to gift them to. So instead, if we can all put a little bit of our time and talent into helping those in need, whether it is making hats for babies in the NICU, warm clothes for the residents of a local shelter, or simply helping out a family in your community to put a few gifts under the tree this year, it would mean the world to the people in need.

I’ve received the first pattern of the challenge and will begin making some hats in the next few days.

The Happy Pigglets

2014-11-05 15.19.11I just put the finishing touches on these two sweeties.

Aren’t they cute?

A couple of months ago I saw the pattern on the Amigurumi To Go website and had to make one for myself. Of course that after finishing the first one, the boy, I was compelled to make a girl as well.

I love amigurumi crochet but hate dislike sewing the pieces together. I end up crocheting everything in a day and then the circles, tubes, and other body parts spend weeks and sometimes months in a corner on my desk while I desperately hope that the Amigurumi Fairy will appear one night and put the tangled mess together. Eventually I realize that I cannot escape my fate (duh!), and months later TA DA here’re some cute piglets.

Since it is almost Christmas I was thinking of making a couple of miniature Santa hats for them and using the piglets as seasonal decorations.

Maybe bunny ears for Easter? We’ll see.

Ravelry Store

Due to the fact that Zibbet decided to quit being a free marketplace, a gesture that somewhat disappointed me, I have decided to look for other mediums to sell my crochet creations and patterns.

I’m not sure why I haven’t previously thought of Ravelry for selling my patterns, even though I’ve been an active member for years. There are no fees if your shop sales are under $30, and even if they go over that amount their cut is a small percentage of how much you sell.

So here‘s the link to my new Ravelry store.

As for my actual handmade creations, I have yet to decide how to go about selling them. I am currently researching online marketplaces with no upfront listing fees.

Birthday gift for science geeks

Behold my latest creation, Mr. Earl Lenmeyer the Flask. The pattern can be found on Ravelry.

The body is stuffed and closed where the blue colour ends, while the top white part I left open so that the stuffing comes out and gives it that cool bubbling gas effect.

Even though he’s super cute just by himself, I decided that he’s missing a sidekick so I created Mrs. Bea Kerr.

I did not close or stuff her, thinking that this way she can double as a pen/pencil holder.

Christmas Present Pillow

I decided that this Christmas I would make as many presents as I could and only buy the remaining few. There are a couple of problems with this. First being not knowing what to make for the male characters of my life and second is having the school semester end right around Christmas-time which means I have to dedicate most of my time on final projects and exams.

A few weeks ago I had an idea of what I wanted to make for my mom. I’ve heard her say for the past two Christmases that she wishes she had some nice Christmas-y pillows for the living room. I wanted something like this but crocheted and red with a white bow.

It took me about a week to complete it but now it’s finally done so I can share it with the world.

ChristmasPillow-21

I originally set out to make a set of 4 pillows by Christmas time but, after seeing how long one took, a set of two seems like a more realizable goal.

I’ve also put together a detailed pattern with pictures for those of you looking to make this pillow for yourself or as a gift for a loved one.
